What is PARLAC?

PARLAC is the acronym for Political Action Reporters Los Angeles County. PARLAC is a Political Action Committee registered with the California Secretary of State.

Political action committees are special organizations set up for the purpose of collecting contributions which are then aggregated into one fund and are used to make contributions to support or oppose state or local candidates. In the case of PARLAC, court reporters employed by the Los Angeles Superior

Court reporters who choose to be members of PARLAC contribute dues in the amount of $7.50 per month.

PARLAC’s purpose and fiduciary duties are outlined in the PARLAC Bylaws and are also regulated by the laws that govern political organizations.

What is the difference between PARLAC and LACCRA?

LACCRA is a professional association which operates to represent and promote its members who are employed by the Los Angeles County Superior Court.

PARLAC is a separate and distinct entity that is sponsored by LACCRA. Because PARLAC contributes monies to political candidates, causes, legislation or initiatives, the two entities must operate separately; however, LACCRA and PARLAC both pursue a common goal of preserving and protecting official court reporters.

Federal and state laws require that the funds of Political Action Committees be maintained separately from any affiliated association. PAC funds cannot be commingled with Association funds.

The PARLAC Board of Directors is elected at the annual General Membership Meeting for the purpose of operating the Political Action Committee.
