Des
cription/Educational Objectives:
There isn’t really one throu
gh the standard of American English despite what we may all have been led t
o believe. I’ll be discussing how non-standard English is actually the “sta
ndard” of English, reviewing some forms of it as well as how to decode some
of African American English.
My objectives are to leave the aud
ience with a basic understanding of descriptive linguistics, some of the ma
jor components of African American English, and most importantly show them
that all dialects are valid.
